as of jan 2025 there is a new dept transport process for the upgrade of atm's on trailers/caravans that are or have been licensed.

the department of transport now requires engineering calculations of the drawbar on trailers that are having an atm upgrade regardless of whether it has had physical modifications or not. the upgrade process will now entail a modification permit to be applied for to vehicle safety section for an approval of the upgrade.

midland trailers can in most cases provide this service for you. we will assess your trailer or caravan as per dept transport requirements, and we are able to provide drawbar calculations along with the required photos and paperwork and submit the application to vehicle safety section for an approval.

once the upgrade has been approved, the inspection can then be completed on the system.
we will then email to you two pages as a pdf attachment. one will be the certificate of inspection. this will contain the phone number for you to call to finalise the upgrade details on the department of transport system.
the second page is the modification permit which must be kept on or in the trailer or caravan at all times. if you choose to sell your trailer/caravan the modification permit must go with the trailer/caravan to the new owner.

atm / compliance plate upgrade:
SOME CARAVANS ARE UPGRADABLE THROUGH A MANUFACTURERS PLATE ( COMPLIANCE PLATE ) UPGRADE.

CHECK THE COMPLIANCE PLATE ON THE CARAVAN FOR THE " ATM " & " AXLE LOAD GROUP " RATINGS. IF THE AXLE LOAD GROUP RATING IS HIGHER OR THE SAME AS THE ATM WE CAN DO A DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT INSPECTION AND FIT A NEW PLATE NEXT TO THE ORIGINAL WITH THE NEW ATM. IN SOME CASES THE AXLE GROUP LOAD RATING MAY BE THE SAME AS OR SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN THE CURRENT ATM BUT AN UPGRADE MAY STILL BE POSSIBLE.

vin# 17 digit vin number
manufacture date: 09/2021
agg: 2500kg tare: 2009kg gtm: 2228kg
axle group load capacity: 2500kg
this trailer was manufactured to comply
with the motor vehicle standards act 1989

in this example we can increase the "atm" to 2750kg.

the axle group load rating is 2500KG, this becomes the "gtm". "gtm" is the allowable load on the wheels when connected to a towing vehicle. we then add 10% to the "gtm" to get the new "atm" of 2750kg.

The 10% added to the "gtm" is the ball weight, which is transfered to the towing vehicle.

THE INSPECTION AND RELEVANT FILES ARE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY TO "DOT". ONCE IT HAS BEEN ASSESED AND RETURNED TO US WE PRINT THE CERTIFICATE OF INSPECTION, SIGN AND SCAN, THEN WE EMAIL IT YOU AS A "PDF" DOCUMENT. THIS WILL HAVE A PHONE NUMBER FOR YOU TO CALL TO FINALISE THE UPGRADE PROCCESS. THERE IS NO NEED TO EMPTY THE VAN OR GET A WEIGH BRIDGE DOCKET AS WE CAN USE THE " TARE " WEIGHT ON THE ORIGINAL COMPLIANCE PLATE.

IN SOME CASES WE MAY HAVE TO REPLACE CHAINS WITH A HIGHER CAPACITY. EG::: CURRENT ATM IS 2400 KG UPGRADING TO 2800 KG. THE CHAIN MAY BE 10MM WHICH HAS A CAPACITY OF 2500 KG. THIS IS SUITABLE FOR AN "ATM" UP TO 2500 KG. WE WILL NEED TO FIT 13MM CHAIN WHICH HAS A CAPACITY OF 3500 KG TO COVER THE NEW ATM OF 2800 KG.

the new plate shown here is attached next to the original plate.

it shows the entity conducting the upgrade and the relevant changes. note the "tare" weight does not change.

the manufacturer is still "windsor" and the manufacture date remains the same.

CAUTION

THE PLATE SHOWN HERE IS OF A CRUISMASTER SUSPENSION PLATE SHOWING THE MAX ALLOWABLE "ATM".

IF ONE OF THESE PLATES IS FITTED OR A CHASSIS MANUFACTURERS PLATE SHOWING A MAX ALLOWABLE "ATM" AND THE CURRENT ATM IS THE SAME, AN UPGRADE OF CAPACITY IS NOT POSSIBLE WITHOUT PHYSICALLY MODIFING THE VAN OR TRAILER.

IF THERE IS NO COMPLIANCE PLATE ( BUILT PRE 1989 ) OR IF THERE IS NO "AXLE GROUP LOAD" RATING, WE MAY STILL BE ABLE TO DO AN UPGRADE. WE WILL NEED TO CHECK THE VAN / TRAILER FOR ITS COMPATABILITY FOR THE UPGRADE BY CHECKING THE SUSPENSION, AXLES, WHEELS, CHASSIS, BRAKES ETC.
